While most of us spent 2020’s lockdown binge watching Netflix and staring into the abyss this lovely local folk duo were busy making magic. Tucked away in the folk cellar on Kings Street Christina and Alex were able to dedicate their time and energy into bringing their debut album to life after having all of their touring plans put on pause due to the pandemic.
If you are a fan of all things folk then you will be guaranteed to enjoy every track from start to finish- that is a given. However, I would also say that even if this genre isn’t your go-to then Hunter is still something you need in your ears- especially if you have been city bound and deprived of the natural world like so many of us have been. It’s the musical version of a spontaneous walk through the most beautiful woods; sunlight streaming through the gaps in the leaves on the trees, a glittering stream dancing alongside you as you meet wildlife such as foxes, bears and even artic foxes along the way as the bird song twinkles in the background.
Each track introduces new characters that embody common themes of love, loss, friendship and dancing as well as drawing attention to the huge importance around respecting and cherishing the natural world. The complimentary nature of the traditional sounds of guitar, violin along with the sweet and airy vocal harmonies is quite simply a delight. There are just layers and layers of beauty in each of the tracks; from subject matter, to storytelling, and musical craftsmanship. It really is an exceptional body of work.
My favourite track comes towards the end with the story of The Greenland Shark. The story of the oldest vertebrate on planet earth is absolutely fascinating and pretty had to believe. After listening to this track, I now have the added thought that this shark continues to roam depths of the ocean in search of love and meaning in her solitary existence. Its melancholy AF but I love it!
This Friday 7th May at 8:00pm to celebrate the release of Hunter, Christina and Alex will be performing on Facebook Live Stream for all the world to hear- be sure to tune in- I know I will be!
