George Riley is a singer hailing from Shepherd’s Bush, West London. Her signature futuristic take on soul infuses the sonics that soundtrack her immediate surroundings, including jazz, R&B, trip hop and electronica. Fusing diverse sounds with her own unmistakable tone, she has woven subtle narratives from underrepresented perspectives throughout her output; steadily building an essential discography with a multitude of essential messages.
George featured on the leading single ‘You Could Be’ from Anz’s forthcoming debut EP All Hours on Ninja Tune. The single release was given a first play by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music 1 show, which coincided with the cover of New Music Daily. Since then the single has been featured on 12+ Spotify NMFs incl US (#53 / 3.8M), UK (791k) and DE (686k), alongside other frontline editorial playlists. The track also featured on Apple Music’s New Music Daily (133 terrs inc US). Radio support has come from Fantastic press pick up with inclusion as lead track in Guardian playlist, plus support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Clash, Crack, Magnetic Mag, The Vinyl Factory + playlist, Beats Per Minute, Trench, Teases & Dares.
Debut project ‘interest rates, a tape’ features singles ‘say yes’, ‘power’ & ‘cleanse me’ alongside collaborations with Joe Armon-Jones and Lex Amor. The release of the tape garnered support from Dazed (7 albums you need to hear this week alongside Tyler, the Creator, Hiatus Kaiyote and Doja Cat), Crack Magazine (aesthetic feature), Notion (‘Undiscovered’ feature) alongside Apple Music selecting George as their ‘spotlight artist’ and radio play from Jamz Supernova (BBC 6Music) and Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music). The release of ‘power’ saw a premiere from the FADER for the Joviale-directed video, alongside a review in Resident Advisor, and airplay from Benji B (BBC Radio 1), Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music) and BBC Introducing London. ‘cleanse me’ premiered via i-D magazine. The track saw George contribute to Benji B’s ‘In 3 Records’ feature, with spot plays from Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra + 6Music), Touching Bass (NTS), Rinse France and more.
‘TRIXXX’ was produced with regular collaborator Oliver Palfreyman. The track sees Riley ruminate on the use of social media, dealing with falling through the traps of the online representations of others and toxic self-comparison. ‘TRIXXX’ was premiered by Benji B (BBC Radio 1), and garnered an array of radio support, from Gilles Peterson (Interview) (BBC 6Music), Joy Orbison (BBC Radio 1), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), Jess Iszatt (BBC Introducing), Touching Bass (Interview) (NTS) and more. Riley also wrote an essay for AFROPUNK, reflecting on social media’s eurocentric beauty obsession. Sophomore single ‘Move’, produced with Oliver Palfreyman, showcases her searing lyrical perspective which centres her Black and Jewish heritage, her political motivation and promotion of Black liberation while looking at white people directly and asking for more than platitudes when it comes to allyship. ‘Move’ garnered an array of support from 4:3/Boiler Room (premiere), COLORS, Clash Magazine, Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Benji B (BBC Radio 1), Tom Robinson (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), Robert Elms (BBC Radio London), BBC Introducing and more.
George has also previously featured on ‘A Different Time’ by FAUZIA, which features on her EP ‘are you hoping for a miracle?’ alongside ‘When It’s All Over’ with Kelela. The track was premiered by The FADER and received support from Resident Advisor, TRENCH, Jamz Supernova (BBC Radio 1), No Signal, NTS and more.
Debut single ‘Herstory’ garnered an array of support, including the likes of Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra) and Moses Boyd (BBC 1Xtra), alongside a 2 page spread in Crack Magazine, who featured the lyrics as a reimagined graphic poster by designer Jason Vaz, whose recent collaborations include Ama Lou, Bradley Zero, and Yussef Dayes. Riley has also featured on tracks for Rago Foot, and NYC rapper MIKE. Previous live highlights include Brainchild Festival, Laylow and BALAMII’s summer series, supporting Oscar Jerome.
