Who?
Iain on guitar, Lisa and Jan on keyboards; all sing and play drums and other percussion over electronic beats. Iain and Lisa grew up near Brighton and have been friends since school. They both went to UEA, where they met Jan and started playing as a band in 2013. Initially they just wanted to make dance music, but they really like guitars too and missed the rawness of bands like Sonic Youth and the Pixies. So they holed themselves up at Sickroom studios near Swaffham and started over, this time aiming at a really big live sound that’s precise and chaotic in equal measure.
What?
This accomplished trio of buddies make music that’s a huge mix between Bis, Pixies, the Tron soundtrack, Seafood and The Human League. Full of a sparkling energy alongside a neat drumbeat, synths straight outta the future and strong vocals from all three members, this is something very special. Brains, their best known track, will be swirling around in your head for days after hearing it.
Influences?
New Order, Metronomy, Chvches, Depeche Mode, Grimes, Pixies, Blondie and Sonic Youth.
What’s happening?
The trio self-released a cassette EP called Fake Feelings in 2014, and the title track BRAINS won Steve Lamacq’s Round Table which meant it got played on all 6 Music shows for a week. They’ve also had lots of support from XFM and BBC Norfolk Introducing. Jan, Lisa and Ian generously promised exclusive personal tracks for everyone who pre-ordered the EP, recorded onto their tapes. They thought they might end up having three or four songs to record, but the first 50 sold out in a couple of hours, so they’ve been busy creating 50 individual songs for fans! Mega Emotion’s first proper single ‘Uncomfortable’ will be released on cassette with a London label called Post/Pop Records. They have previously released cassette tracks by Everything Everything, Pulled Apart By Horses, Ash, Johnny Foreigner and We Are Scientists.
Live? Mega Emotion supported Thumpers at Epic and have also played a couple of odd places recently; a nuclear bunker in Norwich and in a church at Indietracks festival. They played at LaDIYFest in Sheffield last year too. Their next gig is at the Lexington in London on January 7th as part of the Fortuna Pop Winter Sprinter.
