Foxing

Foxing are straight outta St Louis, Missouri, with a sound that’s very much their own, although if you’re a fan of emotional indie soundz with twinkly guitars and personal lyrics, you should get all up into their shiz. Despite a few line up changes, they’re a tight bunch making some ace tunes. They’re playing The Owl Sanctuary this month, so we had a chat with guitarist Eric about touring in Europe and their new album Dealer.
How were Foxing formed?
It was originally Josh, Conor and Jon. The band cycled through guitar players until Richard and I held it down in a tight jam.
What are your favourite songs to play live and why?
I enjoy playing Night Channels and Bit By A Dead Bee Part Two the most because those songs have my favorite guitar parts I've written in them.
Your lyrics are very intimate and personal. Do you think that connecting on such an emotional level with your fans has made you feel as if your fans are more of a family?
I wouldn't say our fans feel like our family as much as I'd say that it feels like they have chosen to bear witness to our personal struggles. Playing on a stage to strangers every night is a bizarre sensation. But I think people latch onto our lyrics because they are honest and naked at times. People feel more of a real connection when they feel like they aren't manipulated into feeling a certain way.
Your first time touring Europe was with Tigers Jaw. How was the experience? Did the crowds and atmospheres differ largely when compared to your usual US tours?
It was a positive experience. It was, for most of us, our first time in Europe so we were all in awe of the scenery and how much history there was to take in. The crowds seemed to be more respectful than most U.S crowds. Talking was kept to a minimum if it happened at all and most people were kind and recognized how far from our home we were, and offered encouragement.
With your record company change (from Count Your Lucky Stars to Triple Crown), do you believe that your newest album Dealer has noticeable recording / production differences to the original release of The Albatross, due to a wider selection of resources for you to choose from as your now with a larger label?
Dealer had an actual recording budget whereas The Albatross was purely out of our own pockets and was done in our hometown.
Have you ever been to a gig when you have just found yourself in complete awe of what was unfolding on the stage in front of you?
I saw the band Do Make Say Think once when I was 15 and it was one of those shows that, as a very young and impressionable musician, changed how I viewed music and how it can be played.
This will now be your second time playing in Norwich, Have you had a chance to have a look around at all?
Last time we played Norwich we had an opportunity to walk around a bit and grab some cocktails. We try to explore new places when we go to them.
What is the music scene like in your hometown of St Louis?
It has rich musical history particularly in the blues and jazz scene. It is also home to the world renowned Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. As far the band scene goes there are some great bands playing out but it's very small and also finding venues to nurture smaller bands becomes more and more difficult all the time.
What made you choose TTNG as your support acts for this tour?
We did a U.S tour with them and I can honestly say that they are my favorite band I've ever toured with as human beings. They are absolutely wonderful.
With only two studio albums, and presumably a lot more to give, what does the future hold for Foxing?
Tour until death.
