May at the Theatre Royal begins with an all-star cast of TV favourites in the revival of Mike Stott’s adult comedy classic Funny Peculiar. Former Coronation Street pair Craig Gazey, who played Graeme Proctor, and Vicky Entwistle, aka mega-mouth Janice Battersby, star in the show until May 5 alongside Suzanne Shaw (Hear’say and Emmerdale) and Gemma Bissix (Hollyoaks and EastEnders). It follows the story of newly-married small-town grocer Trevor Tinsley who is tempted by the charms of his next-door neighbour, in a show which is definitely not for the kids.
The stars of stage and screen are celebrated in a brand-new show from the Hethersett-based Yvonne School of Dance on May 6, before the acclaimed all-male Shakespeare company Propeller return to Norwich as part of their world tour on May 9-12. This time, they are presenting Henry V, the tale of the greatest British warrior in English folklore, and the tragic fairytale The Winter’s Tale. Also joining the company for his very first Propeller tour is Karl Davies, best known for playing Robert Sugden in Emmerdale and Lyle in ITV’s Norfolk-set Sunday night hit Kingdom opposite Stephen Fry.
The theatre then hosts a programme of events for this year’s Norfolk and Norwich before Northern Ballet return to the Theatre Royal stage from May 29 with I Got Rhythm. Set to the music of George Gershwin, ballet meets jazz in a stunning show which captures the essence of the Twenties in a show packed with glittering dancers, stunning routines and the Northern Ballet Sinfonia performing on-stage Big Band style.
