Olivia Rodrigo - Sour

Olivia Rodrigo’s super successful record-breaking album Sour is out now. You may remember her from High School Musical: The Series. It’s impressive that someone only 18 has so much talent!

Brutal is the first song on the album. The first 12 seconds are super sombre, with violins at the start. However, it quite quickly gets loud, with a transition that will certainly wake you up! That’s one of the things that makes it a striking start to the album. I also adore the way this track’s backing instruments are very catchy - you’ll remember it because it has a very simple repeating pattern - it works!

I love the way this album is an emotional rollercoaster at times. The second track on the album is traitor, and it’s slower, emotive and a good example of a ballad. The next song on the album is the supremely successful single Driver’s License, which also follows a similar vibe.

The album proceeds with the song that is stuck in my head a lot at the moment. Good For U is rightly getting lots of radio play. It sums up what the album is about: adolescence, relationships and heartache. It’s a very angry song, the kind that is about a heated argument; this is a mood change from the previous three songs. Enough For You is stripped back, just Olivia Rodrigo’s great, powerful voice and a strumming string guitar. Its simplicity is brilliant. Jealousy, Jealousy shows that Olivia Rodrigo is good at rock as well as pop.

Overall, to say I’m in love with this album is an understatement. It’s definitely worth checking out. Every song on the album is great. Olivia Rodrigo is hands-down the most exciting singer out there at the moment. The album is full to the brim of songs that would make great radio hits, so there’ll be in escaping her this year! She has a very bright future ahead of her; more please in the future, Ms. Rodrigo.
