Alter Bridge - The Last Hero

Alter Bridge return with album number five, and it’s quite possibly their heaviest yet. The massive choruses are still there, and so is the technical mastery of Mark Tremonti on guitar, but this album seem a lot more focused and it seems to have found the atmosphere that Fortress lacked.

The Last Hero is actually a step back in time in many respects. It harks back to the days where we enjoyed the heady heights of Blackbird, and realised what a power house this band could become. ABIII was on the whole a lighter affair, and Fortress, while it was good, didn’t stand up against their previous efforts. The new album though is a welcome return to form, and takes us back into the dark depths of the Alter Bridge psyche. It’s also really heavy, bordering on thrash at times, but all with Myles’ exceptional vocals layered over the top.

After Fortress, I went into this expecting to come away unmoved, but I can honestly say that this album is nothing short of excellent, and it will beg you to come back and listen again and again.

9/10
