Black Country New Road

Alternative folk rock group Black Country, New Road (BCNR) have seen some changes in the member lineup. For many groups this can create a tumultuous barrier to their development and progression. But BCNR are thriving as they power forward with their infectious vibrant energy, only optimised in a live setting. Norwich was treated to a very special appearance on their intimate album release tour in celebration of the new album “Forever Howling”

London based violinist Ninush opened the show. She is in familiar company, having been BCNR’s touring violinist. Her debut single “Stardoll” was released in March, and her performance was a perfect teaser of the magic that's to come. Her vocals were heartwarmingly soft, over enchanting instrumentals that took the audiences on an emotional journey. Her set sparked a sense of intrigue as her songs glowed with a sonic warmth. Perfect to ease the audience into the show.

Soundtracked by the classic cheesy anthem “Lay All Your Love On Me”, BCNR took to the stage. They kicked off the set with quirky folk number “Mary”, softly setting the scene for the evening. Members Tyler Hyde, May Kershaw and Georgia Ellery shared lead vocals throughout the set, harmonising together as smooth as butter. Backed by a tremendous cacophony of tumbling drums, twanging guitars, eruptive brass and tinkering keys. “Besties” ignited the room with it's jamboree esq chorus and woozy melody.

“Two Horses” felt as if it were out of a folk-tale off broadway show with it's enchanting cinematic scene setting. Though the setting was intimate, the band’s captivating grandeur had a distinctive vastness that drew audiences in with awe. The group had the most wonderful chemistry as they beamed away floating from song to song.

“The Big Spin” had fans swaying and hopping along to it's fun family band beat. They concluded with everyone busting out the recorders in formation for “Forever Howlong”, creating a charmingly camp performance that you couldn't help but smile at.

“Forever Howlong” is an album with impressive craftsmanship that excels in a live setting. The group meshed together flawlessly, with fluttering crescendos and magical vocals. Their performance transported the crowd to another period of history. BCNR are truly at their peak, and one can only hope they will continue charming audiences for years to come.
