Dead Reynolds have been plugging away at the music scene for a while, having received their breakthrough being signed to Fort Records. Since then, they’ve been playing a number of festivals, and making their mark on the indie rock scene. The new album though is something of a crossover, venturing boldly into unknown territories. After some time spent exploring themselves, it seems they’ve found their signature sound, and they’ve hit that sweet spot of creativity where everything just falls into place.
The basic premise is that it’s guitar driven indie rock, and for the most part, it’s the theme that dominates the experience, but if you listen to the album intently, you’ll pick up nuances from other genres. The most surprising thing is the range of Callum’s vocals. Having known of his work in bands before this one, I was caught completely off guard.
There’s such a variety on show here, varying from chilled out acoustic, to full on “mosh pit” and it’s glorious. I was genuinely taken aback by just how good this album was, in fact I would liken it to the Spanish Inquisition (Monty Python reference, if you know, you know….). Above all though, there’s no nonsense or compromise, it does what it does effortlessly, and just begs to be listened to.
There is a lot of talent that just slips through under the radar, because we are spoon-fed what’s “trending” right now. We should all take a look at what’s going on in the underground scene now and then, because the local band you see in a seedy club today, may well be the Foo Fighters of tomorrow…. Incidentally, the band will be playing at Voodoo Daddy’s in Norwich on 1st October with some great local support bands, so do yourselves a favour and go along.
