Since The Long Blondes split in 2008, Kate Jackson has followed her artistic muse from Sheffield to Rome before returning to her hometown of Bury St Edmunds. For this album, she has teamed up with ex-Suede man Bernard Butler.
Intended to be a British version of the road songs so common in American pop culture, for the most part this is dynamic, uplifting - if mid-paced – pop rock. Jackson is in fine voice and turns in some great lyrics. Butler’s playing and production are of the high standards we have come to expect.
Opener The End Of Reason is a slice of 90's-style indie-dance. Homeward Bound and Stranded are the kind of songs that would be perfect festival fare. Metropolis and Wonder Feeling are 21st century takes on the experimental glam rock of Roxy Music or Bowie circa Ziggy.
Part spoken word, a more restrained but highly emotive16 Years is a highlight. Another highlight is Lie To Me, a string driven belter taking in the same 60s influences as Last Shadow Puppets. The Atlantic is a rare misfire but closer Last Of The Dreamers is a belting piano ballad that borders on chanson.
Just perfect for cruising around with the windows down on a hot summer’s day, this is recommended.
