It’s been five long years since Kingdom Keys’ debut EP “Beyond What You See” was released, to critical acclaim. The band comprises of six working musicians from various other projects, so you could consider them somewhat of a “supergroup” from in and around Norfolk. Time hasn’t stood still in the KK camp though, and from the instant the opening track fills your head, it’s obvious that there’s been a great deal of evolution during their time out.
They’ve also expanded their production team, drafting in Lee Batiuk (Deaf Havana/The First) to assist, and while that influence can be felt throughout, it’s done with a certain subtlety so as not to detract from the vision that was originally intended. I will admit that I know each of these musicians to some degree, and I was, (or so I thought), fully aware of what they were capable individually before listening, but I have to say, despite that, I was absolutely blindsided by a sucker-punch that left me completely floored.
It’s also impossible to pigeon-hole, because there are a multitude of genres contained within, and whilst the emphasis is on guitar-driven indie rock, it’s hauntingly beautiful one minute, and then trying to rupture your eardrums the next. To compare this release to the one previously would be unfair, as they’re vastly different. The music has matured, the lyrical content is relevant, and it’s altogether a much more polished affair.
I could go on and on ad nauseum about just how good this album is, but pretty much everything I say would be redundant from here on in. One thing that must be said though, is that Sam’s vocals on this album are stunning. I’ve heard him sing countless times, but I have NEVER heard him sing like this. I will go out on a limb right now and say that Violence & Virtue will be in my top five albums of 2021, because I don’t think that there will be much else released this year that is even going to come close. It’s far greater than the sum of its parts, and is quite simply, essential listening for anyone that just appreciates great music.
