London’s Mt Wolf have been around for a few years and, having gone through line-up changes and a hiatus, now release their debut album.
Oh gods, there is so much to admire in the soaring vocals, the instrumentation and the well-crafted songs but I am struggling to connect with this album. This does seem to be a case of craft over passion and I get the feeling that I have heard every song on here before.
At its best, there is a hefty dose of Sigur Ros about many of the songs. Hex is the most obvious and could easily fit onto Sigur’s Hvarf-Heim double set. For all that, the likes of Tucana bring to mind New Age relaxation tapes, Enya and Enigma.
I dunno, I should like this, I really want to like it but there’s a little something missing. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this band but, right now, this isn’t the finished article. If the band can just step out of Sigur’s shadow and find their own sound and identity, they could become something really special. As it is, advertising executives and TV producers are likely to be falling over themselves to use these songs. You know what? That may not be a bad thing.
