Oscar Jerome - Breathe Deep

Norwich-born Oscar Jerome’s first full length LP ‘Breathe Deep’ has been long anticipated. Jeromerides the bright and diverse upwind of jazz fusion coming out of London. He has a huge list of acclaimed collaborators and accolades prior to this project as well as a demonstrated history as adept jazz musician. He certainly isn’t afraid to challenge and push nu jazz by bringing funk, soul, hip-hop and indie rock into his colourful range of influences over the album.

‘Sun For Someone’ holds his acclaim high and bright as dreamy guitars dazzle over a blissful popping bass and the drums really keep everything tight. Jerome himself seems to be questioning our perspectives on the world, maybe in regard to our environment and the people around us. It definitely makes you feel like and want to be a better person. I love the dual vocals that complement this and walk you through the song.

‘Your Saint’ continues in this good-hearted spirit if somewhat more haphazardly penned after Jerome spent a stint in Paris and was dismayed by the conditions of Syrian refugees living in the streets. The brass and percussion courtesy of his KOKOROKO bandmates on this track is experimental and enthralling.

‘Give Back What U Stole From Me’ is reimagined as its ever shape shifting form is finally captured in record form. This is something Jerome is known for and you can see over other songs on the album. It’s great to hear the powerful voice of Lianna La Havas on ‘Timeless’ which sees them dreaming an ode to someone special.

‘Breathe Deep’ is challenging but easy listening, it’s totally fresh yet familiar and its definitely been worth the wait. I think it’s great on the surface and if you’re willing to stick your ear underneath there’s lots more subtleties to undercover, from samples to improv sections to unexpected influences. It’sdefinitely a good one to nod away those isolation days into the sunset.
