Paper Cinema Odyssey // NNF2012, The Playhouse - 20.05.2012

The Paper Cinema consist of a group of 3 musicians and 2...um...performers? Yes, this is one event that I am going to have difficulty describing.

We enter to a three quarters full Playhouse accompanied by the mysterious sound of waves and a smoky atmosphere. The stage is set with fabric screens, looking like sails, and a lot of intriguing equipment. The show begins with an introduction to the main characters, drawn live on a light-pad by one of the performers, and projected onto the main screen, rather like a silent movie.

There are many unusual and varied instruments being played by the superb musicians... piano, violin, electric guitar, the saw and sound effects by voice. The story unfurls slowly, by the performers ‘acting’ by placing a series of black and white illustrations in front of a camera with a black background so they project on to the main screen. It’s difficult to explain... so here’s a trailer for the show...

They tell the tale of Homer’s Odyssey, the trials that King Odysseus goes through on his journey back to his wife Penelope. It’s told with beauty, humour and tenderness with a great sense of theatre and film and a touch of magic (whenever the goddess Athena features, a set of little bells hung high above the audience are rung).

The performance lasts an hour, and the audience are rapt throughout. It was so great to see creative people make art in their own style, and although the equipment used is very modern, the experience felt very ancient...being told a story by a group of what felt like magicians.

I would recommend this to people of any age, and would suggest you go and watch it, or any other of their works, if you get the chance! For now check out www.thepapercinema.com.
