‘Refined food for a Fine City’ – Rishi Restaurant Review

We pre-ordered over the phone for food collection the following day. Collection slots for food are spaced out for social distancing reasons and the whole restaurant (which is now obviously take-away by collection only) has been set up to abide by government rules. Its worth mentioning at the beginning that this restaurant have sent complimentary meals to NHS staff during this crisis, any restaurant donating and making life easier for key workers right now also deserves extra support from us.

The online menu is huge at 8 pages long, although the first page is about the restaurant and the food. Luckily for me, the sections for vegetarian food are clearly marked and set out separately from the rest of the menu. I am vegan so we when making the order we just double-checked that what I had ordered was vegan friendly.

When we opened up the food, it was clear it had been freshly made. When you tend to think of Indian food, you think of stodge and grease, the food from Rishi was not like that at all. The slogan is ‘Refined food for a fine city’, it really does seem like a refined version of Indian food.

I ordered a Mushroom Bhaji (£3.50) thinking it would be a twist on the standard Onion Bhajis I have had before but when it arrived it was not what I expected at all, sliced mushrooms with onion in a tomato based sauce. I really enjoyed this, as I love vegetables and was able to mix this with my curry as well as having it by itself. I am not overly adventurous with Indian food so for my main dish stuck to what I knew and had a vegetable Korma (£5.95). It was full of flavour and a great mix of vegetables such as broccoli, carrot, green beans, cabbage and a small amount of potato.  It was also not too sweet with a really thick sauce.

Tyler had special fried rice (pea and egg - £3.50), the portion was a good size and came just as you would expect it to, again far less greasy than most others which was refreshing. His Garlic Naan (£3.50) was cooked to perfection, slightly floppy with crispy edges and more than enough to have as leftovers the next day. Tyler’s main dish was a chef recommendation, Passanda Lamb (£9.95), this came in a mild creamy sauce, with lots of chunks of lamb.

I would rate the meal quality 8/10, the variety 9/10 as the menu is huge with loads of options to accommodate everyone. In my opinion the menu is a 7/10, although it is huge and well laid out there is not a quick and clear way of telling how hot each dish is or which dishes are vegan as just veggie seem to be highlighted. The whole experience was really good, the staff are friendly and polite, and our food was ready on time and tasted great.
