The Fish N' Chip Shop Magdalen Street

Fish and chips are just fucking great. Its basically what English summer is all about. Going to the beach, getting fish and chips, fighting off the seagulls and pigeons and stuffing your face with as much fish and as many chips as you can. Things have changed slightly now I don’teat fish, but the craving is still there.

This week Tyler and I were lucky enough to taste the food from The Fish n’ Chip Shop. Never before in Norwich has fish and chips been something that has called out to me as most of the food (often including the chips) I can’t eat being vegan. When looking at the menu, the manager had told us to just mention on the phone from the veggie menu what we wanted to be vegan and he would make it happen.  With that in mind I dived in with a vegan burger (£3.00) and chips – obviously a large (£2.80) whereas Tyler went for a large haddock (£6.20) and a large chips as well.

There seems to be a correlation between the length of wait for the food and how good the food is during lockdown. We were told the wait would be an hour so we had high expectations, especially as we ordered at prime food delivery time around 6:00 PM. I can assure you the wait was worth it. When the food arrived it was hot, there was surprisingly little grease and it looked fresh! Even I was tempted to eat the Haddock that had been delivered, it was a massive piece of fish and looked really fresh. The chips did not let me down, they were not as greasy as normal fish and chip chips (if that makes sense?). This obviously meant I felt better about eating all of them in one sitting. I have never had burgers like the ones that were delivered. There were whole pieces of vegetable in, the texture was thick and meaty without being too much like it was trying to be fake meat. My only regret is not ordering a gherkin; I fucking love gherkins and I bet these guys do a good one.

Overall this meal was a 8/10 – both of us loved it. The menu for me is probably a 6/10 purely because I would love any fish and chip shops that provide vegan food to make it clear on the menu and to advertise it more, it would also be great to see a vegan fish substitute, something I have tried and loved. They do have a big menu for all the meat eaters and have some really amazing offers too so I would recommend checking those out before deciding on an order. The quality of the food is a 9/10, it was freshly cooked and tasted delicious.
