The Flaming Lips - Oczy Mlody

Oczy Mlody starts all soft, warm and fuzzy with an instrumental title track that sets the pace for The Lips’ fifteenth studio album. It’s beautiful, full of melodies that stick with you and hazy, dreamy, happy vibes oozing like honey throughout. Despite a few brilliantly odd and comical moments, their more avant-garde side has been set aside to proffer some good solid music covered in a film of Vaseline. There Should Be Unicorns is a belter, with a thundering bass and swathes of harmonies as well as a cameo from Reggie Watts. I love the fuzzy funk breakdown in the middle of Nigdy Nie (Never No). The sweet ass beats and wonky guitar of Listening To The Frogs With Demon Eyes are cool as fuck. Innocent love songs The Castle and Sunrise (Eyes Of The Young) could have come straight off The Soft Bulletin back in ‘99. There’s a featherlight touch to Almost Home (Blisko Domu), and We A Family wraps up the album with a warm, enveloping hug of a singalong feat none other than Miley Cyrus on vocals alongside Wayne. This is the dazzling sound of a mature band who have the confidence of experience but retain the ability to create instant classics with a quirk and a wink.
