Ruby Sue's debut EP- 'Northern Boy'

One of my resolutions I set myself every year (which I know I will stick to!) is to continue to discover the incredible abundance of musical talent which exists in our fine city!
From the brilliant buskers which line our cobbled streets to the range of open mic events which allow budding musicians to take to the stage for the first time, Norwich clearly is a city which will never be quiet!

A few weeks ago, I caught up with local quirky pop artist, Ruby Sue, ahead of their release of their debut EP, ‘Northern Boy’ (which is out now!), to discuss their journey as a musician, the inspiration behind their EP, as well as their top tips for anyone wishing to enter the music industry themselves!

- When did your love for music begin
Music has always had a huge presence in my life, but my first memory of really *feeling* the love for it was seeing my dad on stage in his band when I was a kid!

- How would you describe your music?
I’d say that my sound is a bit poppy and a lil quirky and fun! So I’m gonna go with quirky-fun-pop😂

-Where do you look for inspiration for your music?
I often draw inspiration from general life experiences, things friends or family have been through and what’s going on around me :)

- Do you aim to leave your listeners with any messages with your music?
I really relate to the messages that Frank Turner’s music depicts, which is about the importance of being kind, staying true to yourself and having fun. I wouldn’t necessarily say that my music generally has a message, but I try to convey those things, too. Music and lyrics can be interpreted in any way by listeners, so I’d have to ask my audience/fans for a better answer!

- How are you feeling ahead of the release of your debut EP, ‘Northern Boy’?
I am SO excited!! The tracks have been ready for a while and I’ve been overthinking the whole release plan, so just decided to do it Ruby-style (aka last-minute)!

- Is there a meaning behind the name of the EP?
The EP title and tracks relate to a relationship I was in during my time at college. It’s all about being young, feeling free and enjoying the innocence of those times whilst it lasts.

- What power do you believe music holds?
Music holds an immense power over me and my life; it’s the reason I met my partner and many of my friends, studied at college and university, have met so many of the wonderful people I know and the reason that I’m still standing, honestly. I really do owe it all to music.

- What advice would you give to any upcoming artists?
Hang in there. It’s a really challenging industry and there will be times where you question yourself, your art and pretty much everything. But your art holds power and it’s so important to hold onto that. You have the power to make people feel things and that is a beautiful (although sometimes scary) thing.

- Have you got any plans for 2024?
My current plans for 2024 are to play a lot more gigs and record some new music!
