This year we will be continuing our new CPD programme for teachers, developed and delivered in partnership with Norwich University of the Arts, in which we explore the work of global majority artists in our collection. In each of the online sessions we focus on an individual artist by presenting their work, hearing from them directly wherever possible, and then engaging in discussion and related practical activities which could be shared with your students. We intend to raise awareness of artists from diverse backgrounds who may not yet be on your radar, whose work we believe would be a valuable addition to your classroom practice.
As well as supporting ethnic minority students in the UK to explore their own cultural identity, engaging with these artists could contribute to an improved understanding of cultural difference for the school and wider community. Past events can be accessed on YouTube: The launch event includes a workshop led by Everyday Racism developed to give you the skills to talk about race, cultural identities, and inclusion with confidence. Session One: Tesfaye Urgessa Session Two: Wangechi Mutu Session Three: Rana Begum In session four, on Tuesday 3 November, we focus on New York-based American Mississippi Choctaw/Cherokee painter and sculptor Jeffrey Gibson.
We will begin with a short presentation of Gibson’s practice, followed by a practical exploration of different aspects of his work. Sainsbury Centre Associate Artist Ian Brownlie will share a range of activities based on some of Gibson’s key ideas and processes, especially his use of pattern, geometry, text, and collage. Make along with us during the session, and also take away loads of ideas for activities to do in the classroom with students of all ages and stages.
