BK & Dad

Who?

Leo plays guitar and Pip plays drums. They grew up together in Wales, went to the same schools and played in the same bands. BK & Dad was the name of a scrap metal dealer who used to live up the road from them where they grew up in Wales. They were pretty rock n roll and used to wear big black hats rolled up so they nicknamed the BK “Balaclava Kid”. Leo went to uni in Norwich, played in space-rock improv band I Don't Know and ended up staying. Pip toured with other bands around Europe, visited Norwich, ended up staying and taking over drum duties in IDK. This last year has seen the band play the XFM All Dayer and Artrocker New Blood festivals as well as getting the chance to meet their heroes Acid Mothers Temple and play with them at EPIC.

What?

Experimental quarry psych rock; kinda Jesus Lizard meet The Melvins meet Karp with Dead Meadow wah and fuzz delay.

The duo are always developing their sound and have recently been playing around with vocals and a more minimal playing style. It can be pretty noisy, vast and sprawling sometimes, other times angular and tight. Like the night. They’ve collaborated with other musicians, and accompanied The Neutrinos to Berlin a few years back. They’ve also been developing a live show with visuals, and held installations at St Lawrences Church for NNF12 before touring with it, including a show back home in Aberystwyth in front of some old school mates.

Influences?

Ennio Morricone, The Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, Karp, Acid Mothers Temple, The Boredoms, Lightning Bolt, AD/DC, Sabbath, Bardo Pond, Neil Young, The Country Teasers, Earth, Earthless, Fugazi, The Wipers, Rhys Chatham, Hiraeth, Rocks, Electricity and Gideon Koppel's film Sleep Furiously.

Live?

BK & Dad will be celebrating Record Store Day on 18th April at The Owl Sanctuary with Super Luxury and Girl in a Thunderbolt. They’re also playing at Norwich Arts Centre on 22nd May for NNF15 with The Neutrinos and enjoying a free entry summer knees up at Geldeston Locks on May 30th with Beast with a Gun and The Grazing Saints.
