Bridesmaids

“It’s a chick-flick, but it’s ok, it’s like The Hangover”, is the way I’ve heard this movie described recently, especially between males down the pub semi-apologetically. This type of comparison to other male lead comedies, just because they share bodily malfunctions needs to stop - now!

Sure, it is funny when they get food poisoning whilst trying on dresses, and who doesn’t love a bit of drunken air rage? The problem is whilst this comparison provides the closeted movie-goer with a shield of masculinity as their testosterone threatens to tear itself from their bodies (one men’s magazine even hailed it as a “vom-com”, ffs), it doesn’t go anywhere near to describing why this film really works.

The real strength of this film is in the characters. Kristen Wiig who co-wrote this film, is very good as Annie. I loved Wendi McLendon-Covey in Reno 911 and she delivers some great lines here, whilst Melissa McCarthy steals every scene she is in.

Not all of it works though, and scenes involving Matt Lucas feel like someone broke into your house and used your camcorder to randomly film their arse in the middle of your wedding video. All in all though, it’s a very real comedy for everyone.
