De La Soul Live Seaside Spectacular!

De La Soul // The Aquarium, Lowestoft, 09.05.14

I have loved De La Soul since the tender age of 16 when I was just starting to discover my musical signature. Several albums and many years later, the prospect of seeing them at Lowestoft's brand new venue The Aquarium, on the ACTUAL PIER, certainly piqued my interest. The promenade lights were just about lit when I arrived, and joined the queue of excited fans to get in. The venue is very nice indeed, simply decorated and with plenty of good staff and seating areas. The auditorium itself is a good sized rectangle, all on one level with a low stage, enabling everyone to get a really good view.

De La came on (minus DJ Plus One who was not in attendance tonight) around 10 and played for an hour. Trugoy and Posdnous were in total full effect, extremely positive and bouncy and got the crowd of around 200-300 people whooping with their hands in the air from the first track. Although the first few tracks are unknown by most, when they hit us up with 'Potholes in My Lawn' we were all chanting along. Posdnous and Trugoy are still very good, and although the music itself is quite muddy and doesn't travel too well to the back of the room, the rapping is spot on throughout. They thank the audience profusely on several occasions, for being fans through the years and for turning up tonight. They tell us they really enjoy playing in smaller places and feel they owe it to their fans to not just play London and Manchester.

They, rather brilliantly, conduct a straw poll of the ages of the audience... and give a special shout out to those aged 37-40 who appear to take the largest share of the fans tonight (which makes me happy as I fall within that bracket myself!). Hits like 'Saturday', 'Oodles of O's', 'Buddy', 'Me Myself and I', '3 is the Magic Number' and 'Say No Go' come thick and fast, and sound just as good as when I first heard them back in early 90s. Just looking around and seeing how many people know all the words gives me a real glow of pleasure. I could easily enjoy a longer performance, another hour at least, with all their tracks that I love so much, but hey, we're all getting older and it's home time.

Thanks De La Soul, you totally still rock.
