Emily Barker and The Red Clay Halo – Almanac (Everyone Sang)
Let’s not beat around the bush. There’s no point. This is pretty much generic folk toss that I’ve heard a hundred times before and could have done without having to have put my ears through again. Now don’t get me wrong, folk music done well can be beautiful, but this basically sounds like it’s been done by numbers, ticking off all the prerequisite boxes as the album progresses. Twee flute? Check. Terrible plucked banjo? Check. Song about a witch? Yep, got that one covered too. So just who would put this out then? Well actually, she did on her own label. I’ll make no more comment about that though.
I really want to have something positive to say about the album, but the truth is it’s just really boring and uninspired and I can’t really see any genuine folk fans being that into it because there’s so much more impassioned and thought provoking folk music out there, particularly at the moment it would seem.
But The Sun likes it so what do I know?...
