Foals @ UEA

Ethereal lighting, a plethora of man buns, and a forest backdrop made for a hipster’s paradise as Foals took to the UEA stage. “Norwich are you ready to get nasty? It’s Saturday night in Norwich, you guys should be getting nasty” said lead vocalist and lead guitarist Yannis Philippakis as the band began to play future hit, Mountain at my Gates, with much excitement from the crowd. Yannis’ exceptional vocal range was brought to life with this animated performance full of heavy drums and a dominant bass line (which, I must say, produced some questionable dancing).

The band played several songs from previous albums, including the addictive My Number, which unsurprisingly gained a terrific reaction from the crowd, with its peak at 23 in the UK charts ensuring that audience members were singing along to the catchy hook at the top of their lungs. It took me a few moments, and several nudges, before I noticed Yannis modestly walking off the stage, to the main entrance, then back up to the stage again. This bizarre interlude went overlooked by the majority of audience members whose authentic Ray Ban Wayfarers somewhat limited their vision. At one point there were a string of mellow songs and the dancing thinned out a little as the gig progressed. However, as expected, the finale of What Went Down was incredibly well received with raging vocals and zany strobe lighting.
