Harry Edwards – Winner of Next Big Thing 2014

Harry comes from Aylsham, and wowed the crowd at the Next Big Thing final with his beautiful, complex yet minimalist music. The final was only the second time he had ever played live so were doubly impressed! Lauren Laverne has also recently chosen him for her Headphone Moment. We highly recommend you check out his Soundcloud and watch out for him in the future!

Sounds like

Hip hop. Electronica. Minimalist. James Blake. Whispery and mystical. Powerful & punchy. Sexy as hell.

Influences

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Kanye West, Arca, The Mars Volta.

Biography

I come from a band background and I would still class drums and bass as my main instruments. I had a few drum lessons when I was a kid that were very helpful in just understanding how to play basic 4/4 beats, but other than that I picked up most things by myself.

I use Ableton; I chose it on the basis that I might end up doing something live and it's been incredibly helpful. My song writing process is very impatient and can kind of come out of nowhere. I don’t spend ages on a song; the longest I spent on something was a week and a half, because I just couldn't figure out how to do the vocals - I think it was my track Lesser. I wanted a rapper but I was too impatient to wait, so I just tried to do something myself. I've written everything in the last 2/3 months, and the last track I did is very different to the first. I haven't been signed yet or released any music, but I do have some plans to release something on new label Morpheme in the future.

How did it feel to win Next Big Thing 2014?

It was quite surreal to be honest. The whole competition, for me, was an exercise in understanding whether or not I could pull of the music I make live, but also looking at my performance. I think it went okay, but there is a lot to understand and learn and invest time in. Everyone was very nice about it and seemed to enjoy so that's a plus. I still have a lot of work to do.
