It’s super hero time again, as this month sees the return of the man in the iron basque – Iron Man! Downey Jnr, Paltrow and Cheadle are back. Favreau revises his side-kick role, but leaves the directing this time to Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang). Fans of the series might be justifiably concerned by a change of management in the difficult third stage of a trilogy (remember X-Men: Last Stand?) but Robert and Jon certainly don’t think it’s going to be a problem, as they have been very publicly Kiss Kiss, Bang Banging his ass in every interview about the movie, so that’s good.
In fact, a slightly different angle on Tony Stark might not be as big a problem as you might think, I mean, if he existed in real life it’s frankly hard to believe he could be one person! Firstly, he’s a millionaire playboy with the kind of reputation that would make Charlie Sheen’s biography read like Cider with Rosie, yet this doesn’t seem to get in the way of his work – in fact it’s elevated his fame as a scientist to Brian Cox standards! As is demonstrated in this new instalment, his commitment and skill at putting terrorists in the ground is only rivalled by Obama, and despite bromances forged with giant green men in the Avengers, is as independent as Beyonce when it comes to relying on being part of a group – phew! It’s no wonder he needs a PA – and he’s even finding time to smash that!
With a cv like this, Ben Kingsley’s villain, the Mandarin, shouldn’t be too much trouble, and with the cast, crew and effects team (Weta) that this movie boasts, I don’t think there’s any reason to doubt that this instalment will be as good as the first two.
