Jake Morrell
Jake Morrell has been making music in Norfolk since his late teens. Bit by bit, song by song he’s been gaining audiences both locally and across the UK. He may have started by playing upbeat acoustic, but over the last year the mood has swung towards Country. With a new EP called Englishman just released, along with a single of the same name and a series of cool videos, it’s a good time to check out what’s been happening to our Jake of late.
Of course Country is all the rage. Been popular for years of course but the problem locally is that acts mostly favoured the flavour of the USA scene. The emergence of New Country shows there’s a different breed coming through and Jake is definitely amongst that group. Acts who love what Country has to offer - the ability to tell stories about life, write good tunes and be pretty open with the old emotions – yet with a British twist.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Jake told us, “I love all that Country heritage. I listen to loads and I’ve been to Nashville and it’s great. But back here I can’t write songs about big open highways and just wanted to create something more real to me.” Listen to the words of Englishman and you get it all in one go.
From his last set of songs till now Jake has taken a break from releasing tracks. Bit by bit he’s been piecing together his new sound, forming a band to play it live too. It’s interesting to see with the latest EP an artist inching their way musically to where they want to be. First up it needs to be said the songs are all strong but if you were expecting Country or you thought Jake was still acoustic, you are in for a surprise. He has a new blend, a new genre almost. Jake is pretty excited about what he’s making right now and the acid test was to try them out in front of a hardened audience of Country fans from here and the USA at the recent C2C: Country to Country Festival in London. Their verdict? “They liked them!” he told us.
If you want to check out Jake Morrell’s new EP Englishman and watch the videos to go along with them – catch them on YouTube or Facebook. Jake promises he will be back playing in the county very soon.
