Jungle Brothers @ Waterfront Studio
Welcome to the Jungle Brothers' block party
It's pouring with rain. It's back to school day tomorrow. There's just been a bank holiday. The Great British Bake Off is on.
There are only 40 people in the Waterfront Studio. Welcome to the Jungle Brothers' block party.
Last year Bam and Mike played to a packed out Arts Centre and fed off the bouncy and happy vibes of the crowd that night. Tonight they are upbeat and cheerful despite the low attendance and give it to us 100% all night long.
The crowd is standing about in their wet coats like they're waiting miserably for a bus that will never come. After 25 mins some brave chaps initiate some shuffley dancing at the front, followed by a hearty and kids-at-a-wedding dance round a handbag towards the back from one lady and four bald headed gentlemen. Those four bald headed gentlemen also enjoy windmilling across the floor to the Jungle Brothers' house/hip hop classic I'll House You. A chap in a Prodigy top seems to be having the best night EVER, demonstrating some fancy footwork straight out of the 90's. We're having a good time right here.
The rapping is still spot on, it's good and loud and they really look like they're enjoying it. Starting off with How Ya Want It (I Got It), Bam's flow in particular is excellent and it still sounds fresh and current. Brainfrom Raw Deluxe is beautifully smooth and lyrical. Jimbrowski is still a belter of a track, sounding like it could have just been created yesterday rather than way back in '88 .The highlight of the night, as was the case last year at the Arts Centre, is True Blue. And yes, it's the Aphrodite drum n bass remix that is perhaps one of the greatest remixes of all time that gets played tonight. Take one slack, sexy, laid back hip hop track and just when you don't expect it, slam in a phat d'n'b rhythm. So good.
They're professional. They're genuine. They are extremely good at what they do. Coming all the way from the US of A to this small dark room, here in Norwich, with these people and still managing to put on a full on positive show? Good on you, fellas. I imagine the audience at The Jazz Cafe in London tonight will make up for Norwich not turning out tonight for these talented hip hop guys. Boy, did you miss out.
