Nocturnal Animals

If you were hoping for a movie about bats and badgers, then I’m afraid that I’m about to disappoint you. If, however, you were hoping for a movie that’s dark, sinister, and twisted, then you are in for a treat this month, as we look at Nocturnal Animals.

Amy Adams plays Susan Morrow, a successful trendy-gallery owner. Despite her success, life is dull and monotonous for Susan. Until she receives a manuscript of a novel titled Nocturnal Animals written by her ex fella Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man she hasn’t seen in nigh on 20 years since leaving her Texan hometown. Which is all a bit unnerving for her, considering that not only did she leave our would-be-author for another man, but she told him that she didn’t think he had the chops to be a writer – ouch. After that, I’d be expecting a flaming box of dog shit left on the doorstep, not a literary masterpiece. Curiosity soon gets the better of our Sue, and she’s quickly hooked by the dark tale of revenge, which revolves around a man (Gyllenhaal again) whose wife and daughter are kidnapped by road-thugs, and parallels between the story and her past become increasingly apparent.
