Not Waving @ The Loft
A raw barrage of snarling synths and frenetic drums
Kling Klang move to The Loft for the latest in their no-wave events, and start off in their new venue with one hell of a line-up, with The Invisibles and Alessio Natalizia, under his Not Waving moniker, delivering live sets to accompany the Kling Klang resident DJ's.Looking through Not Waving's current tour schedule, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were actually reading the livery on the side of Del Boy's trusty three wheeler. London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, New York and Norwich. Yes, that's right, that's our plucky little city going toe to toe with the big boys when it comes to exciting electronic music bookings.Support act The Invisibles kicked off the night on an impressive array of modular synthesisers. Their playful, improvised set, not only had feet on the dancefloor, but a lot of smiles on faces too, with infectious loops willing you to move. Not Waving's set, drawn mainly from this year's Animals (my album of the year so far) was a raw barrage of snarling synths and frenetic drums, all with the neon infused, giallo movie soundtrack sound that Natalizia does so well. Tracks such as I Know I Know I Know and Work Talk were given a slight reworking for the live arena, and a punchy, distorted version of 24 with its driving bassline and scratchy samples was a particular highlight.During a brief chat with Natalizia, I quizzed him on what brought him to Norwich. "They asked me" he answered simply with a cheeky grin. So there you have it; that's how easy it is to book quality live music these days, you've just got to have the nerve to ask. Luckily, Kling Klang have nerves a plenty and cracking taste. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do next.
