Noveller - Epic

It's an intense show

Noveller - Epic

So, here's the thing. Noveller - the musical project of Sarah Lipstate - has managed to tear my head into two pieces and set them arguing against each other. I'm lingering at the end of the bar in Epic Studios, and this is the conversation that's happening between me and myself. "Sweet, fiery hell. What a searing sound!""Sure. But, what's with the projector?""You mean the one showing a film of x-rayed spines and carousels?""Yeah. That. I mean, isn't it just a bit... strange?""Well it's a bit different to your standard affair, yes. Don't worry, it's just a bit unfamiliar is all.""But it isn't making any sense! It's all jumpy and incoherent. What's the deal?""Some would argue that art has failed if it isn't always asking questions of the viewer, a perpetual mystery that one must seek to solve endlessly without ever actually...""Can we PLEASE not have this discussion right now? Drink some more cider. It's just a tad surreal.""Actually I think it's kind of majestic. And that track is bringing some real gravity to those stark, rapid images. They feel weighty. It's a really interesting concoction.""Okay fine. So what about this music, anyway?""Don't you think it's rather impressive? Those guitar sounds are unreal, the layering is complex, nuanced. The use of effects is just stunning at times. These songs have clearly been put together with amazing skill and attention to detail.""Well, yes. Technically it seems like pretty high level stuff. But also I kind of feel like I'm listening to what should be a soundtrack to a film in which a sexually isolated pianist sits on a train for four hours watching the Serbian landscape shoot past as he ponders the ultimately vacuous meaning behind his grandfather's pocket watch.""You want vocal, don't you?""I like vocal...""You're an idiot.""Don't you feel slightly like David Gilmour has been shut in a room with decreasing levels of oxygen, and then given way too much time with every effects pedal ever?""For crying out loud, man, what is it with you? Actually I think some of the stuff here is pretty astounding. These deep, resonating sections contrast wonderfully against the moments of manic energy. And, moreover....""I'm sorry but WHY is there a man playing a synthesiser resting on a bar stool?""Will you stop being so petty? If I'm not allowed to discuss the nature of art then at least shut up about what bloody apparatus is being used to support an instrument. It sounds great.""Alright, alright. Lipstate cuts quite a severe figure on stage, doesn't she?""It's an intense show, so I'm not surprised. It works, I think. It's entirely cohesive with the feel of the tracks, the psychological punch of the sound. You're getting that at least, right?""I don't know. There's something a bit cold about it. Detached.""You need to broaden your mind a bit, my friend. I think it's a bit brilliant.""Or entirely ridiculous.""We should do this again.""Or maybe not..."
