Thirteen shows during February and March led to this moment, which saw the Brighton-based band come to a climactic finale at Voodoo Daddys Showroom.
Their prog-rock, genre-boggling and time signature-altering style, overlaid by a calm coolness on stage, created a terrific atmosphere under the floorboards of the City Centre. A bumper thirteen songs made the set list, predominantly taken from their latest album, Flare.
Supporting the main act were bands ‘The Mink’ and ‘Wylt’, who each deserve their own Outline review in the near future. It was another night of success for Voodoo’s.
Headlining the show, Plantoid launched into their opening song, ‘Parasite’. A thrilling six-minute display of raw energy, the five teased what became over an hour-long spectacle of talent.
Chloe Spence’s vocals, intercut with her electric guitar playing, were threaded perfectly through a synthetic dream-like soundscape; the lyrics adding to the mystic built up through their relaxed stage presence and experimental approach. Tom Coyne’s flawless lead guitar, with a clean tone, is a focal point of a range of ambient gated riffs. Drummer Louis Bradshaw is an ever-present, pinpoint percussionist, and was consistently busy and fluid in his range of beats.
Also joining the dynamic trio on-stage for the show were bassist Matt Todd and synth player Callum McMurchie. Matt’s pulsating bass provided a complimentary low-end to the live mix, whilst Callum showcased a multi-skilled ability to switch from synth, guitar, and backing vocals.
‘Daisy Chains’ bought the evening, and the tour, to a thrilling close. This changing paced, dream-like track encapsulates Plantoid’s tone perfectly: emotion and urgency, interspersed with a contrasting sense of calm.
Plantoid are back on the road on the 14th March to play at ‘Louder Than War Live Festival’, in Manchester. The group will then be playing at Sheffield’s ‘Get Together Festival’, on the 16th May.
