Reef had the potential to be a global phenomenon, with a career racking up a couple of decades or more, challenging Red Hot Chilli Peppers, or Foo Fighters for their titles - I kid you not. I speak, of course, as a fan who indeed thought they were American until I grew up and was able to appreciate their lineage through British rock music. They were music loving boys with thick West Country accents and they gave us gifts of songs for a decade before disbanding – now, they’re ready to give us one more gift. After their spectacularly well-received reunion tour last year, it was clear Reef were still a fans band, and had a nation of attentive ears to entertain. They now release a treat of an album in the form of a 9 CD and 1 DVD package, featuring every commercial song recorded, including their very first demo ‘The Purple Tape’ – which led to the band being signed to Sony. Hymns of your youth, ‘Place Your Hands’, ‘Naked’, ‘Come Back Brighter’ and a mixture of well known hits and rarities peppers the collection, along with a 64-page booklet, a 12” vinyl of their newly arranged 5th album (Lucky #5), a vintage poster and a replica demo of their ‘Purple Tape’ sessions.
