Sigma @ the Waterfront
Sigma have hit the nail on the head for a Wednesday night out.
Usually a stereotypical indie girl of Norwich, I stick to Superfood and Wolf Alice. But after attending a year of parties held by some of the biggest DnB fans out there, I was drawn to Sigma's gig at the Waterfront.
Entering the authentically grubby venue, we're thrown in at the deep end with the first support of the night; Majestic. A guy who really gets the crowd going, Majestic throws out remixes of Feed Them To The Lions and Skepta's That's Not Me, which get grime fans in the audience already going for it. With the crowd chanting along from the outset, Majestic stirs up the quite cautiouscrowd.
Next up is Karen Harding, resonating sass and encouraging solidarity. The crowd are slightly less enthusiastic than before, however Harding hits those high notes with pure brilliance, vocally impressive and on point.
As the audience gets restless, out come Sigma, along with their drum and bass merry men.Guitarist Joe is completely submerged in a wave of dirty bass; he shows off his musical skills from the word go. The two female singers alternate their voices appropriately, their soft yet excitable vocals contrasting with the low and scummy underbeat. And scummy is the right word to use. After the eintroduction of Mischief, the crowd open up an energetic pit. With Glitterbug hitting the spot, Sigma build an atmosphere of pure excellence. But they don't stop there; a remix of Show Me Love is thrashed out during their set, one that holds many a good party memory with me. This song is the pinnacle of the night for me - happiness is really oozing out of this crowd. As the bass gets more intense and strobes
increase, Sigma well and truly get the crowd involved and in love with their presence.
Ending with Changing and Nobody To Love (their biggest hit), the night draws to a sweat-drenched close. Sigma have hit the nail on the head for a Wednesday night out. As I said, I’m an indie girl through and through, but there's a little part of me that will always love DnB - and tonight proved just that.
