An incredible night at the Waterfront

***WARNING - SWEARS INVOLVED IN THIS REVIEW***

So the first words that come out of Jason Williamson's mouth are "FUCKING CUNTS". If the audience didn't know what to expect from Sleaford Mods they fucking well do now.

Musically, it's a relentless beat emanating from a laptop on a stool covered in weed and love stickers, and a massive one-fingered salute. Andrew Fearn grins like he knows what's coming, and presses the play button with great aplomb. In between, he has a few beers and dances about, like a low energy Bez or a member of Goldie Looking' Chain. It's brilliant.

Frontman Jason, and he is a frontman, more so than a singer, is also a showman through and through. From mincing about like he's in heels to stomping around shaking the sweat off himself like a boxer and bellowing down the mic, he gives it his absolute all throughout the gig. The audience (about 99% men, of bloody course) bellow right back at him; it's a proper lovefest. Even when Jason and the audience yell "FUCK OFF!" or "WANKER!" at each other, it's done with a bit of a wink and with fondness. The overall sound is noisy and it's brash and it's the very opposite of what society tells us to be in 2015. It's OK to complain about your shit job and your shit manager and the fucked up system. And it's also OK, at the same time, to laugh at words and references that he throws in to show us his world (Tiswas, Angel Delight, Pete Tong, Shabba). McFlurry goes down a storm, as does Jolly Fucker and Jobseeker. Jason's like a cross between an ape and the most sophisticated word-smith I've ever heard. And very sexy, somehow. It must be the old treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen. We're treated to a couple of truly excellent new songs in which Jason's words are beautifully syncopated with the rhythm; nearly hip hop but not quite. His voice, when he sings, is powerful and a cross between David Bowie and a dalek.

In a world where you can't say boo to a goose without it suing you, Sleaford Mods says what's in all our souls, whilst making us laugh. It doesn't get much better than that. They're going from strength to strength and from what I've seen tonight will be shouting FUCK OFF at the world for some time to come.

Also, I met Jason briefly at the end when he signed my interview with him in Outline. He was just charming. But don't tell anyone that.
