The Twilight Sad – No-One Can Ever Know (Fatcat)
It’s been just over two years since The Twilight Sad released their second album, ‘Forget The Night Ahead’, which garnered them some very well deserved acclaim and did a very good job of raising their profile. They’re now back with the follow-up, ‘No-One Can Ever Know’, but if you expected them to rest on their laurels and stick to the same, proven, formula, you’d have been mistaken; opening track, ‘Alphabet’, hits you smack in the face with some gorgeous, dirty synth sounds with barely a guitar in sight. But don’t let that put you off, The Twilight Sad are on top form with ‘No-One Can Ever Know’ and this is a heavy, powerful album with all the trademark spitting vitriol fans of the band will have come to expect from singer James Graham. Overall, the album is sparser sounding than previous efforts, with echoes of the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and Authechre amongst others, and it’s all the better for it. The Twilight Sad have created another fantastic album here, made all the more exciting by just how different is from what they’ve done before. I’m intrigued and eager to hear where they go next.
