Turin Brakes

If ever you need a midweek lift to get you through that middle of the week feeling, look no further than London’s Turin Brakes.

They are back out on the road once again to finish off the tour that got cut off in its tracks rather abruptly, during last year due to lead singer Olly Knight’s Crohn’s disease flaring up.
There’s always a good energy, packed with lots of love, and warmth in the room along with plenty of fun to be had at a Turin Brakes gig and tonight is no exception.
They thank us all very jokingly of course for patiently waiting in the EPIC studio since last November when the original gig was cancelled.

When the band come together it is pure poetry in motion, it’s a real sight to behold, such is the meticulous delivery and the cohesion between the band members with each of them contributing vocally. How often do you see that from a band? They have such rich harmonies between them and when Knights and Gale Paridjanian’s vocals collide and they get up close to each other with guitars in hand, that’s when the magic really fills the air.

I have seen them many times live now over the past twenty five years and I have never seen anyone get a tune out of an electric acoustic guitar in all of my fifty years of gig going like Paridjanian does, it’s quite a sight to behold and thankfully Future Boy that gets a play tonight, really does highlight his intricate guitar skills at their most finest.
Knights vocal range is quite exquisite, its beautiful, emotional, passionate and uplifting all at the same time.
The newish album Spacehopper is showcased and several tracks such as the title track, Pays To Be Paranoid and The Message are as good as anything that they have ever made in their career to date, it’s a fine album and it’s also been quite fabulous to hear them go way back to the start, taking us on a journey through their ten album career, to remind us all of how we fell in love with them back in the day, in the zero’s.

To hear tracks like the amazing Average Man, Emergency 72, Pain Killer, Last Chance, and Underdog (Save Me) once again is such a delight.

They are incredible, a very special and accomplished group of musicians, an absolute pure joy to watch and listen too.
They play with fire in their bellies and possess such a rich deep veined intensity and it’s all done with a smile on their face. They are true masters of their craft, artists at work. What a night, what a band!
