Under the radar in East Anglia

Tired of your tunes? Hook yourself up with something fresh…and local. There are hundreds of rad musicians holed up in the bedrooms of Norwich, all cooking up fantastic and innovative music. They don’t all shout about it though, so let’s peek through the keyhole at some underground artists that you may not have heard of…yet. Support your city’s quietly subversive creative creatures!

Tristan Burfield : Epic, cinematic electronic sounds using computer games, toys and junk. Some tracks are crazy glitchy, some sound like they could be on the latest Batman soundtrack.

Moonlands: Melancholy indie pop merchants Moonlands have had serious big up’s from the BBC. They’ve just recorded two new songs and have shows lined up in London and Dublin.

Unix : Funky jazz through to electro house, Unix aka Lyam started making music in his early teens using retro game consoles. His track Barbie Girl hit 100,000 plays on Youtube in 2012.

Island Fox: Chillingly emotive vocals and electro pop; Jess Bartlet works with a variety of producers to create a layered organic sound using samples & unusual lyrics. New releases are due in 2015.

Magic Panda : Lo fi electronica on the ethereal yet energetic tip. Jamie “Magic Panda” Robson has released several EP’s from his basement studio, and supported The Portico Quartet. New material is on its way.

Cove and Hithe: Acoustic folk at its most harmonious; natural, delicate and beautiful in tone. Shows for 2015 include The Plasterers Arms on 6th Jan and Norwich Arts Centre on 19th Jan.

The Boy with Two Heads: Complex live and electronic post rock/punk, electronica and hip hop; imagine an instrumental Thom Yorke. Forthcoming EP The Good Consumer is out in 2015 and he’s supporting DJ Food at NAC on 27th Jan.

True Adventures : Tender acoustic indie folk from Heart of a Dog’s Samuel Leonard Keith Leonard. His new single North Atlantic Ocean combines unaffected lyrics with delicate melodies.

Teen Brains : Noisy surf pop with nod to Ride and The Stone Roses.  They’ve only been together a few months but have already supported Childhood. First EP will be out in 2015.

Catnip and Claws: Dynamic and smooth electronica with a 90’s vibe. Emma Catnip is one of the few female electronic music-makers in our fair city. Check out her track Beings.
