Addison's Uncle, Feral Mouth, BeauBowBelles & Pirate Joe @ NAC
Sold out NAC for an evening of stomping folk, country, swing and Americana.
Tonight, the Arts Centre is sold out for Addison's Uncle's album launch party.
Kicking things off, Pirate Joe puts in a set of good humoured set of acoustic-gypsy-flamenco-calypso-folk. With perhaps a little too much emphasis on the wacky, Joe reminded me of Nick Helm’s character in BBC3’s Uncle. Good fun. (6/10)
London’s BeauBowBelles bring their swing-folk-Americana to Norfolk for the first time. Reminiscent of Rainbow Girls and Vagaband, with songs like Alien Tango here’s hoping the four piece come back soon. (9/10)
I spent all of Addison’s Uncle‘s set trying to come up with a comparison other than Mumford & Sons but then they finished with Little Lion Man... That’s not the whole story though. The self-proclaimed folk stompers also bring to mind Bellowhead and, in their less strident moments, Lau. Decent but a bit lacking in originality. (7/10)
Despite being second on the bill, Feral Mouth close the evening with their strident, invigorating take on bluegrass-tinged country. Those that think they don’t like country need to check this lot out. Like Steve Earle, they rock harder than many so-called rock bands. Songs like Nelson’s Country Breakdown and A Hundred Kinds of Lonely show a character missing so many in the genre. Great stuff. (9/10)
