Andrew O'Neill Is Trapped Down A Well

Having seen Andrew O’Neill before and found him very funny, I was excited to catch the last night of his new show, which was at the Art Centre last night. O’Neill didn’t waste any time, and started proceedings as his own warm up act, as it were. He humorously and thoroughly nailed down the demographics of the audience, and not only did we find out the age, gender, and origin of the crowd, but we discovered that half of the people there hadn’t seen O’Neill before.

If you, like them, are not familiar with Andrew O’Neill’s absurdist stand-up comedy infusion of heavy metal, anarcho-veganism, and mid-nineties pop culture, then you’ll need to check it out yourself, because annoyingly it’d difficult to put down on paper. Seriously, that last line took me ages. Luckily for the unfamiliar in the audience, however, Act One was mostly a reprisal of some of his best and funniest material from previous shows. Also luckily, this material doesn’t get old, much like O’Neill himself (he moisturises), and was still funny even to those familiar with it (it’s the way he tells ‘em), so it was a win-win for the whole room.

Going in to Act Two, I’ll admit that I was curious about the title. Well, the well isn’t an actual well, and Andrew O’Neill isn’t actually trapped down it. In fact thinking about it now, it’s a bit weird that I ever thought he might be, but it does serve as a great kicking off point for one of the funniest of the many funny songs that were played that night, and as he said himself, “You’ve got to call it something”. That’s not actually what he said. It was something like that, but it was way funnier. And that’s the point.

It was a great show, and I’d see him again, and again. I think he’s funny, I think he’s clever, and I think he’s got a point.
