Anthrax - For All Kings
6/10
Time was when Anthrax were at the forefront of innovation in the world of metal. I can’t be the only person who first became aware of Public Enemy when I saw Scott Ian sporting their t-shirt can I? Chopping and changing lead singers hasn’t helped them over the years though, but they appear to have finally made peace with Joey Belladonna, frontman during their 80’s heyday. Their previous album ‘Worship Music’ was an unqualified success so does this new release live up to expectations? Well…kinda.
The sound is bright and clear, if anything a touch too clean. Belladonna’s vocals suit the production, but his style of singing does feel a bit stuck in the past. New guitarist Jonathan Denais stamps his identity all over this album with some terrific lead guitar. Scott Ian gives it all the requisite chug and the rhythm section of Bello & Benante give the songs the agility they need. So, what’s the problem? Despite listening to the album numerous times I’m finding the songs really aren’t sticking. The choruses aren’t memorable enough and too often it feels like Anthrax by numbers. There are highlights of course - Monster At The End really works, Breathing Lightning is the new song that will remain in their set for the rest of their careers and Blood Eagle Wings fully delivers over its 8 minute duration.
Ultimately though a lack of truly memorable songwriting lets this album down, despite all the pieces being in place. The new songs will not sound out of place in a live show, but personally I’ll be sticking to those 80’s classics.
