BK & Dad, The Grazing Saints & Colossus // Epic, 21.06.2014

Saturday night at Epic and a great example of the variety of styles to be found in what is becoming a vibrant local scene.

This is Colossus's  second gig and the second time I have seen them. Playing pretty much the same set as at Pony Up a few weeks back, they still remind me of the Delgados, Fiel Garvie and Suckle but tonight also got hints of St Etienne and the Cocteaus, while the female twin lead vox is distinctly School of Seven Bells. For The Sun is a classic in the making but I'd like a wee bit more showmanship, please. (7/10)

From what I had heard before tonight, I expected the Grazing Saints to be Drive-By Truckers style Americana. Oh no, this was a mutant swamp blues, John Fogerty and Credence Clearwater Revival channelling the Stooges. OK, things went off the boil for the second half of the set but I'll be checking 'em out again. (7/10)

Following a triumphant set supporting Xaviers at NAC back in February, I was expecting a lot from BK & Dad and the duo duly delivered. Tonight, vocals are added to the mix of thunderous drums and cacophonous, looped guitar to produce something a little different to previous gigs. Coming on like a mix of Glenn Branca, Ministry and My Bloody Valentine, this is an awesome noise in the true sense of the word. (9/10)
