Bloody Knees & There's Someone In The Pond // Olive's - 09.02.2013

A cold Saturday night and it’s down to Olives for the second ever gig from There's Someone In The Pond. After their debut gig at the Arts Centre a couple of months back, I compared 'em to the likes of John Spencer Blues Explosion and the Mary Chain. I’ll stand by those comparisons but will throw in The Cramps and Meteors. "Jeffrey" still has one of the best choruses I’ve heard for a long time and, given the right video, "Do The Crab" could become the blues-punk-indie-psychobilly "Gangnam Style".

On to headliners Bloody Knees and some proper old school punk rock. I was hearing the influence of Stiff Little Fingers, early Damned, Buzzcocks and Exploited, with elements of US hardcore acts Misfits and Poison Idea. Singer Brad sounding a lot like SLF’s Jake Burns but maybe I’m showing my age as Brad hadn’t heard of Burns!?! Whatever, this lot put out a lot of energy, with the songs showing enough individuality that they could, potentially, overcome the limitations of punk and follow Iceage in gaining a bit of crossover success.

All in all, a good night, although a shame that I missed opening act Rawshank.
