Cerebral Ballzy, Bloody Knees & Volunteers // Epic 05.08.14

Another evening at Epic, another evening of punk...

Hailing from Bury St Edmunds, four piece Volunteers kick things off in ramshackle but exciting style. The sound is at the hardcore end of the spectrum, taking in GBH, Subhumans and Minor Threat but with hints of Sham 69 and the UK Subs. Check 'em out when they support Agnostic Front at the Owl Sanctuary later this month. (7/10)

Cambridge’s Bloody Knees are a more melodic proposition. The likes of Stitches are poppy punk meets gunge, bringing to mind SLF, Ruts, Mudhoney and Senseless Things. There’s a touch of Kelly Jones of Stereophonics in Bradley’s vocals but that may just be his current tonsillitis. Darlings of the NME, big things may await Bloody Knees. (9/10

Cerebral Balllzy come from New York. And don’t you know it. Frontman Honor Titus mentions it at every available opportunity but I’ll let him off as it is also clear from the music. The songs have the swagger of Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers, the attitude of Richard Hell & The Voidoids, the aggression of the Dictators and the energy of Agnostic Front or Sick Of It All. Epic witnessed a classic performance from a great band. (9/10)
