Childhood - Lacuna

Childhood, the youthful band of merry men from Brixton, have taken the music world rather by storm of late - in fact, their new album Lacuna was Radio 6 Music's Album of the Day only yesterday. They've released the album on a variety of formats, most importantly, deluxe vinyl. Because this album should be listened to at your leisure, with a cocktail or similar in hand, and an unbuttoned trouser. It's a thing of dreamy, flighty, careless whispers, whilst still remaining incredibly catchy and danceable. There's definitely a touch of the old Stone Roses and The Invisible in there as influences, but when is that ever a bad thing?

The musicians manage to make playing these songs seem effortless, and the instruments all fit so loosely together so as to give each the space it needs but jointing together almost tele-pathetically. There are some very memorable drum beats, and soaring guitars, and over it all, the soft, delicate, velvet swooping harmonies of lead singer Ben Romans-Hopcraft. 11 tracks equal an hour of gauzy tracks which also sometimes show a more detailed and jazz solo side, including the debut single Blue Velvet, the beautifully discordant and Smiths-esque Right Beneath Me, and their most recent single Falls Away. Overall, Childhood make me feel like I'm suddenly able to run super-fast with no effort, or even fly with some kind of beautiful spiderweb wings. No gravity with Lacuna.
