DZ Deathrays - Epic
Support bands overshadow the headliners.
Having seen them at the Waterfront a few weeks back, I was looking forward to Happy Coloured Marbles. Tonight was perhaps more experimental than the Tilting Sky set, mixing an almost '60's style, Cream tinged blues-rock with more contemporary alt sounds. My only real complaint is that the vocals could be stronger. (7/10).
It takes a brave band to have Dingus Khan as support. Two bassists, two drummers, an electric ukele player and a singing guitarist combine to make a wonderful twisted, punky, poppy noise. At times, the silly dancing and general japery threaten to overshadow the music but underneath it all are some brilliant songs. Ambulance, Knifey Spoony, Made A List and the like deserve a bigger audience. If only Mick Squalor hadn't made himself throw up on stage... (9/10)
Tonight, DZ Deathrays were heavier and punkier than their Blood Red Shoes support slot. Maybe it is the addition of a second guitarist that, at times, takes them into Wet Nuns or Sleep territory. Mostly, this was ploughing the same furrow as Drenge. Not bad but not great, this left me a little cold, particularly after the deranged genius of Dingus Khan. I suspect the rest of the audience will disagree. (6/10)
