Fionn Regan//The Bunkhouse Vol 1 Anchor Black Tattoo

Fionn Regan is one of my favourite singer songwriters. A small, Irish, dark haired elfin man, rather reminiscent of Graham Coxon in the way he shrinks from the world, Fionn has had 3 albums out previously, the first having been nominated for the Mercury Prize.  I like his attitude; “I’ve always just followed my instinct, I’ve made some huge sacrifices in order to work that way, but I think once you stop doing that and tailor make your music to fit, you’re not really an artist anymore.”

The last album, 100 Acres of Sycamore, was more orchestral than his previous offerings, and was rather magical as a result. This album is entirely stripped down; in fact it was recorded very simply by Fionn himself with a 4-track and one microphone. He has always sung about love, family and nature, which is why it seems very easy to relate to his music. His easy, gentle folk style has never seemed more poignant or true to me; songs about the sea, about having tea with elderly relatives,  about a tattoo or returning to a place you once loved all sung so simply and with such feeling; it’s really quite marvellous. My only complaint is that there are only 10 songs and the longest is 3:21. More please, Fionn.
