Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways

It's still very much a Foo Fighters Rock Album

Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways

This is Foo Fighters' eighth studio album, and it takes rather a different route than their previous albums. This time around, Grohl et al have recorded eight songs in eight iconic American cities, and each song was written about and in that city. It's accompanied by an HBO series called Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, which looks at the history of the recording studios to be found in those eight cities.

It's a clever and interesting concept for an album, but I'm not convinced that the resulting songs are noticeably different to any other Foo Fighter songs. It's barely evident on any of the songs that they are about any particular city or in any particular musical style to reflect that city. It's quite Springsteen, as it should be in trying to represent American rock history, but as a result it's kind of a shame. The album begins with the two best songs of this collection. Something From Not starts off ever so gently with Grohl's voice and a simple plucked guitar, but soon gains pace and energy with a classic punchy riff. It makes you feel full of life and purpose. Second track Feast and Famine is also a great song, a classic American rock song filled with a rather controlled level of fury. Overall, this album is a little predictable, and despite the tiny touches of Blues and Country, it's still very much a Foo Fighters Rock Album. There are quite a few filler songs in there, and I feel a bit disappointed that they didn't really go for it and adopt very different musical styles for each song, which would have made it a whole different cup of tea, and much more interesting and unusual.

7/10
