Glen Matlock // Voewood, 17.08.14

Based on one evening out of three days, music plays second fiddle to literature at Voewood but this is a thoroughly friendly, welcoming experience.

The evening starts with She Makes War. Using guitar, ukulele, percussion, an amazing voice and looping herself, Laura Kidd creates glorious gloom-pop. From Olympians to Delete, this is a great set. Get to the Levellers in November and be beguiled. (9/10)

Midge Ure is in fine voice and proves an accomplished raconteur. From Breathe, Vienna and Fade To Grey to Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and If I Was, this acoustic set spanned Ultravox, Visage and solo, showcasing a great songwriter. (8.5/10)

Punk poet Stevee Boye is entertaining and humorous. Similar to Attila the Stockbroker, he is worth a listen. (6.5/10)

This is a marquee at the East of England’s premier wedding venue. Close your eyes and this could have been an excellent covers band. Open those eyes. Glen Matlock is flanked by Slim Jim Phantom and Earl Slick. It becomes so much more. God Save The Queen, Action Stations. Blank Generation, Livewire and Pretty Vacant present a masterclass in endearing, enduring rockabilly-meets-R'n'B. Bringing Ure out for the encore of Small Faces' All Or Nothing was a master-stroke. (8/10)

I’ll do my damndest to be back for longer next year.
