Gravy Records Summer Party @ NAC
Hannah Lou Clark, Emily Winng, Edward Jakenssen & Superglu
Gravy Records presents Hannah Lou Clark, SuperGlu, Emily Winng & Edward Jakenssen
I’ve seen Emily Winng a couple of times before but tonight was the first time with a full band from the outset. It was a revelation, with Winng and band putting in a cracking set of musically joyous, lyrically dark Caribbean-inflected pop. (9/10)
In the bar, Edward Jakenssen plays a decent set of acoustic jangle. Vocally, Jakenssen is very Paul Heaton, with a hint of Morrissey. The songs are good but a bit more personality is needed to stand out. (6/10)
I like SuperGlu a lot. Diving Bell is one of the songs of the year so far. The two Bens, Krysta and Alex make a euphoric racket, recalling prime The Fall and Half Man Half Biscuit. Tonight, technical issues involving a lack of spare guitar and spare strings derailed their set. Good, but not as good as the NAC debut a few months back. (8/10)
With Hannah Lou Clark, Gravy have discovered a star. The music is melancholic, dark and gothic - but absolutely not goth - with blues, rock 'n' roll and folk in the mix. Single Kids In Heat and My Game are superb but tonight something doesn’t quite click for me. HLC will do better gigs than this. (8/10)
